Why do Brazilians say 'quero não' instead of 'não quero'?
Quero não is colloquial Brazilian Portuguese for no, thanks or I don’t want it. Standard Portuguese puts the negation first: não quero. Brazilians flip the order and tack não onto the end of the verb. The construction is everywhere in spoken Brazilian, especially in the Northeast: posso não (can’t really), sei não (don’t know), quero não (don’t want it).
In this short clip, a Brazilian mother turns down a tiny offer of cazuca (cachaça) from her child with the soft refusal: « Quero não amor, obrigado. Só bebida » (don’t want it, love, thanks, just the drink). The post-verb não makes the refusal sound gentle, almost apologetic. Não quero would land flatter.
