What does “pus-vaanam” mean in Tamil?

புஸ்வாணம் (pus-vaanam) is the Tamil word for a sky-rocket firework that hisses out instead of exploding. The first half புஸ் (pus) mimics the sound of escaping air; the second half வாணம் (vaanam) is the sky-rocket. Together: “pssst-rocket.” Tamil families learn the word at Deepavali, when fireworks are central to the festival, and a pus-vaanam is the disappointment of a child standing over a fizzling fuse.
