What does “não bate bem da cabeça” mean in Portuguese?

Literally, não bate bem da cabeça means something like “it doesn’t strike well from the head” — but in everyday Brazilian speech it just means someone is a bit crazy, off, or not thinking straight. It’s a gentler, more playful way to call someone doido (crazy) than a direct accusation — closer to English “he’s not all there” than a real diagnosis.

In this clip from the satire show Pânico, a guest jokes that the politicians being impersonated “nenhum deles batia bem na cabeça” — “none of them were quite right in the head” — a classic use of the phrase for needling, comic political commentary rather than literal illness. You’ll also hear it with na cabeça in place of da cabeça; both are common.
