What does the suffix “らしさ” mean in Japanese?

A theme-park cast member reassures a nervous Pikachu that he doesn’t need to force ピカチュウらしさ (“Pikachu-ness”) — he can just be himself. -らしさ is a noun-forming suffix built from -らしい (“seems like X,” “typical of X”), so 自分らしさ means “one’s own particular self-ness” and 子供らしさ means “childlikeness.” Attach it to almost any noun and you get an abstract quality of “being true to that thing.”

It’s a genuinely productive pattern across Japanese: 女らしさ (“femininity”), 日本らしさ (“what makes something distinctly Japanese”), even brand slogans built on ブランドらしさ (“brand authenticity”).
