What does “yattemita” mean in Japanese videos?

〜やってみた (yattemita) literally means I tried doing it in casual Japanese, formed from やる (to do) plus the auxiliary 〜てみる (to try doing). On Japanese YouTube and Niconico Douga, the phrase became the standard way to title amateur how-it-went videos in the late 2000s: 歌ってみた (I tried singing), 踊ってみた (I tried dancing), 弾いてみた (I tried playing it). Whole creator subgenres grew around the format on Niconico, where the 〜してみた tag system organized the early Japanese internet video scene. The line between professional and amateur softens here: anyone can post a yattemita with a self-deprecating shrug.
