What does “배려” mean in Korean?
배려 (baeryeo) is the everyday Korean word for thoughtful consideration — noticing what someone around you needs and accommodating it before they ask. It’s less a single act of kindness than a social reflex: giving a tired person room to rest, softening a request, holding a door of attention open. Korean culture treats this quiet attentiveness as basic courtesy, not an extra favor.
배려 is Sino-Korean, written 配慮 — roughly “allotting thought” toward another person. The verb is 배려하다 (baeryeohada, “to be considerate”), and a considerate personality is 배려심 (baeryeosim, literally “consideration-heart”).
