What does “c’est gênant” mean in French?
The reel title calls this conversation “gênante” — awkward. “La gêne” covers a wide range: mild discomfort, embarrassment, and social awkwardness all in one word. It is not a strong word like “humiliation.” You feel “la gêne” when you say something wrong at dinner, or when two people like each other but cannot say it. It is one of the most useful French feeling words, and learners often miss it.
The reel title says “conversation gênante sur la jalousie et l’attirance” — “awkward conversation about jealousy and attraction.” The whole exchange is built on that feeling: one partner admits she finds someone else attractive, and neither person knows quite what to say next. “Gênant(e)” is the adjective: “C’est gênant” (it’s awkward), “une situation gênante” (an awkward situation). “La gêne” is the noun: “J’ai ressenti de la gêne” (I felt awkward / I felt embarrassed). The verb is “gêner” — “Ça te gêne ?” means “Does that bother you?” or “Is that awkward for you?” One useful detail: “la gêne” also covers physical discomfort or inconvenience. A doctor might ask “Vous ressentez une gêne ?” — not embarrassment, but pain or discomfort. Context tells you which meaning applies. English has no single word that does all of this.
