What does “jit winyan” mean in Thai?

Talking about a blind friend’s heightened senses, this clip lands on a quietly beautiful line: «รสชาติ ของ อาหาร ขึ้น อยู่ที่ จิตวิญญาณ» (“the taste of food depends on the soul”). จิตวิญญาณ (jit winyan) means “soul” or “spirit”, the inner essence of a person.

It’s a compound of two heavyweight words: จิต (jit, “mind, psyche,” from Pali-Sanskrit citta) and วิญญาณ (winyan, “consciousness, spirit,” from viññāṇa). Both carry deep Buddhist weight, so จิตวิญญาณ is loftier than everyday “feeling”, it’s used for the spirit of a person, a place, or a nation. A reminder that in Thai, taste can be a matter of the soul.
