In a dictionary, pachet is simply a “package” or “parcel.” But in Romanian family life it’s the food you wrap up to take with you — the lunch a parent packs for a child’s school day, the leftovers relatives press on you as you leave. Mâncare la pachet is “food to go,” so when a Romanian says they’re making your pachet, they don’t mean a box in the mail — they mean a meal sent along with love.

Pachet is a neuter noun borrowed from French paquet and German Paket, so it looks familiar across Europe (compare Italian pacchetto, Spanish paquete). The everyday food sense is the one to know: îți pregătesc pachetul pentru școală (“I’m getting your packed lunch ready for school”). Here the mom is doing exactly that, and slips into the diminutive pachețel — “little packet” — the warm, affectionate form you reach for with a child. That -el ending is Romanian’s go-to diminutive for masculine and neuter nouns, turning pachet into something small and tender.
