What is Česká televize?

This promo is for Česká televize (Czech Television), the country’s public broadcaster, known by its initials ČT. The tagline says it plainly: «Česká televize zbližuje generace» (“Czech Television brings generations closer”). Funded by a household licence fee, it runs channels for news (ČT24), sport (ČT sport), kids (ČT :D), and culture (ČT art).

For learners it’s a goldmine: clear studio Czech, subtitles, and an archive (iVysílání) of news, fairy tales, and the beloved bedtime cartoon Večerníček. Mentioning ČT to a Czech is like mentioning the BBC to a Brit, a shared institution everyone has an opinion about.
