How do you say your clothing size in French?
In a French shop the question is quelle taille faites-vous ? and the answer is je fais du 36. Sizes take faire: je fais du 40, elle fait du 44. Je suis 36 is the English pattern showing through. Shoes work the same way but change the noun — la taille is for clothes, la pointure for shoes: quelle pointure faites-vous ?
Faire du plus a number turns up wherever French quotes a figure about a person or a machine: la voiture fait du 130 sur l’autoroute is “the car does 130.” Swap the number for a noun and the same construction means taking part in something — faire du piano, faire du vélo, faire du sport.
