What does “bûcheron” mean in French?

un bûcheron
French word-building
a woodcutter — the person who deals in bûches, logs

A bûche is a log, and -eron turns it into the person who works with it: un bûcheron, a woodcutter. That suffix is a reliable French job-maker — forge gives forgeron (blacksmith), vigne gives vigneron (winegrower). Spot the base noun and you can usually guess the trade without ever having met the word before.

The same bûche turns up on dessert menus as the bûche de Noël, the log-shaped Christmas cake. This retelling of the honest-woodcutter tale repeats every line several times, so the surrounding vocabulary sinks in with it: la hache (the axe), l’étang (the pond he drops it into), and the possessive pronouns the whole story hinges on — cette hache est la mienne, “this axe is mine,” where French keeps the article that English throws away.
