What does “kahvi” mean in Finnish, and why do Finns drink so much of it?

Kahvi simply means “coffee,” but few words are more Finnish in spirit. Finland drinks more coffee per person than any country on earth, roughly four to five cups a day for the average adult. In this reality-show clip the kahvi is, naturally, getting splashed around. The verb that travels with it is keittää (kahvia), “to brew coffee.”

Coffee is so central that the kahvitauko (coffee break) is built into the Finnish workday and was historically even protected by labour agreements. Reach for the compound and you also meet kahvikuppi (coffee cup) and pannukahvi (boiled “pan coffee”). Offer a Finn kahvi and you’re speaking the real language of Finnish hospitality.
