What does “boss” mean in Egyptian Arabic?

In this noisy friends' challenge game, one player keeps grabbing attention with بُصّ (boṣṣ), “look!”: «بص اللعبة كده» (“look, the game goes like this”). Where Standard Arabic reaches for انظر (unẓur), Egyptians say boṣṣ, from بصّ “to glance.” It’s the everyday way to point something out, show off a phone screen, or stop a friend mid-sentence.

You’ll hear the feminine بُصّي (boṣṣi) and plural بُصّوا (boṣṣu) just as often, plus a softened “boṣṣ ya sidi” for “look here, mate.” It pairs with كده (kida), “like this,” which closes half of Egyptian sentences. Two tiny words, and suddenly you can give directions.
