What does “fik” (فيك) mean in Levantine Arabic?
When the kids in this clip shout at a passing plane, فيك تنزّلي طابة؟ — “can you drop us a ball?” — they’re using one of Levantine Arabic’s neatest tricks: في (“in”) plus a pronoun means “can.” Literally “is it in you?” — the ability is pictured as something inside the person. فيّي is “I can,” فيك “you can,” فيها “she can.” No verb “to be able” required.
The negative is just as handy: ما فيّي — “I can’t,” the all-purpose Levantine excuse, covering everything from tiredness to refusal. Fusha would say أستطيع or يمكنني; Egyptians say أقدر (a verb Levantines use too). The children’s chant also delivers طيارة — the everyday word for airplane, where fusha has طائرة — pure playground Arabic.
