What is the difference between “dua” (دعاء) and “salah” (صلاة)?

Arabic has two words English flattens into “prayer”: صلاة, the structured ritual prayer performed five times a day, and دعاء, a personal plea to God in your own words, made anytime, for anything. دعاء is the one that saturates everyday speech — friends part with ادعيلي (“pray for me”), roughly Arabic’s “wish me luck.” Knowing the difference unlocks a huge amount of daily conversation.
