What does “comer fuera” mean in Spanish?

comer fuera
Everyday Spanish pattern
“to eat out” — fuera covers life away from home

Comer fuera is “to eat out” — no restaurant needs to be mentioned, because fuera (“outside”) already means “not at home.” The little word builds a whole family of phrases: cenar fuera (dinner out), dormir fuera (sleep away from home), trabajar fuera (work away). Its opposite is simply en casa: the eternal budget question is ¿comemos fuera o en casa?

The clip is the pattern in action: Pablo cooked constantly in Spain because los restaurantes son caros — but in Thailand he eats fuera, fuera de casa every day, since restaurants are cheap and his flat has no kitchen at all. The full form fuera de casa makes the meaning explicit; conversation usually trims it to just fuera.
