What does “de rebaja” mean in Spanish?

Rebaja is a price cut, from rebajar, “to lower.” Clothes de rebaja are on sale, and las rebajas is the sale season every shopper waits for. But the word can carry a sting: call something — or someone’s friends — de rebaja and you’ve branded them cheap, the bargain-rack version of the real thing. A useful word for shopping, and for spotting snobbery.

The telenovela mean girl weaponizes it: after listing her designer brands, she sneers “tú y tus amiguitas de rebaja siempre van a estar muy por debajo de nosotros en la moda.” For actual shopping, the friendly forms are ¿está en rebaja? (“is it on sale?”) and rebajado (“marked down”).
