What does “hungarikum” mean in Hungarian?

A hungarikum is not simply “something Hungarian.” It is a legal category: since a 2012 act of parliament a national committee keeps an official register of things judged uniquely Hungarian and worth protecting — foods, buildings, crafts, inventions, sporting legacies. The word fuses Hungaria with unikum (“something one of a kind”), and Hungarians use it half-proudly, half-jokingly for anything unmistakably theirs.

The register runs to roughly a hundred entries and is public at hungarikum.hu: Csabai kolbász, Kalocsai paprika, the Buda Castle Quarter, Herend porcelain, Tokaji wine. Below the hungarikums sit wider tiers of nemzeti érték (“national value”), including county and local lists. The speaker’s own answer to “what is Hungarian culture?” is broader still — pálinka, Puskás, and, she adds, a panaszkodás: complaining.
