What does “jól jár” mean in Hungarian?

Jól jár has nothing to do with walking well. It means you came out ahead: you got a bargain, you lucked out. Jól jártál ezzel a telefonnal is “you did well with that phone.” Its twin, rosszul jár, is the opposite — things went badly for you. The plain verb jár (“to go, to walk”) quietly turns into “to fare.”

You will hear it wherever money or luck is being weighed: shopping, ticket prices, second-hand deals and, as here, a haul of gifts whose recipients are about to jól járni. Dictionaries even record the card-table sense — jól jár a lapja, “he’s getting good cards.” The same jár shows up in jár neki (“he’s entitled to it”) and jár valakivel (“to be dating someone”), so it repays learning as a verb of circumstances rather than of motion.
