What does “leerkracht” mean in Dutch?

Leerkracht is a teacher — Sophie uses it naturally when she says “Ik werk als leerkracht Nederlands.” It’s the general, everyday word in Flanders, but it’s also alive and well in the Netherlands, where it’s the standard term in primary education (basisonderwijs), alongside meester and juf. For secondary and higher education Dutch speakers more often say leraar (teacher generally) or docent. The word itself is transparent: leer (learning/teaching) + kracht (force, power).

So the difference is less “Belgium vs. the Netherlands” than register and level. In Flanders leerkracht is the catch-all; in the Netherlands you’ll hear it most for primary-school teachers and in formal school contexts, with leraar and docent taking over higher up. Because Sophie also tells you “ik kom uit België,” the clip is a good chance to notice the word in natural Flemish speech — just don’t assume a Dutch speaker would never use it.
