What is the Dutch “fietsexamen”?

Every Dutch kid takes a fietsexamen (“cycling exam”) around groep 7 or groep 8. It has two parts: a written theorie-examen with questions about right-of-way, traffic signs, and cycling laws, and a praktijkexamen where kids ride a marked route through their neighbourhood while volunteer parents and police observers watch from corners. Pass and you get a fietsdiploma. The Netherlands has more bikes than people, so the exam isn’t symbolic.

In this clip, a Dutch class is briefed before riding the practical route: “Vol de bordjes en elkaar absoluut niet innemen. Dus niet samen fietsen, oké?” and “Oké, succes allemaal.” The teacher’s tone is light but the test is real.
