What does “weleens” mean in Dutch?

“Weleens” is a small Dutch word that rarely appears in beginner textbooks but turns up constantly in real speech. In a question it means “ever”: “heb jij je weleens afgevraagd?” = “have you ever wondered?” In a statement it means “sometimes” or “occasionally”: “ik doe dat weleens” = “I do that sometimes.” It is built from “wel” (an affirming particle) and “eens” (once), and which meaning it carries depends entirely on whether you are asking or telling.
