What does “Promi” mean in German?
A Promi is a celebrity — the short, everyday word Germans reach for instead of the mouthful Prominenter. It’s der Promi, plural die Promis, and you’ll hear it everywhere: tabloids, TV listings, gossip over coffee. German loves trimming long words down to a snappy core, and Promi is one of the cleanest examples — chop prominent after two syllables and the celebrity is served.
The word comes from the adjective prominent (“well-known, in the public eye”) and its noun form Prominenter/Prominente. Promi keeps just the opening syllables and adds the plural -s → die Promis. The register is informal but completely mainstream: news anchors and headlines use it without a second thought, which is exactly what makes it worth knowing early.
