What does “পাহারা দেওয়া” mean in Bengali?

In Bengali, পাহারা means a watch or a guard, and দেওয়া means “to give” — so পাহারা দেওয়া literally “gives a guard,” i.e. to stand watch or protect something. In this fable, the bees strike a deal with a bear: “তুমি যদি আমাদের পাহারা দাও, আমরা তোমাকে মধু দেব” — “if you guard us, we’ll give you honey.” The bear agrees, and stands watch over the hive instead of raiding it.

পাহারা descends from Sanskrit প্রহর, the same root behind Hindi/Urdu pahra and Gujarati pahero — historically a “watch” was also a stretch of time, roughly a three-hour guard shift, which is why প্রহর can still mean “a watch of the night” in more literary Bengali. দেওয়া is one of Bengali’s busiest light verbs: pair it with a noun and it supplies the action while the noun carries the meaning — সাহায্য দেওয়া (“to help”), ধন্যবাদ দেওয়া (“to thank”), and here, পাহারা দেওয়া.
