What does “non fa niente” mean in Italian?
In Italian, “non fa niente” is the warm little phrase for “never mind” or “it doesn’t matter.” Word for word it reads “it does nothing” — fare means to do or make, and niente means nothing — but Italians use it to wave a worry away. Drop a glass, arrive late, change plans? A quick “non fa niente” tells the other person it’s fine and there’s nothing to apologize for.
It works as a stand-alone reply (“Scusa!” — “Non fa niente!” / “Sorry!” — “No worries!”) and also stretches into a full sentence with “se” (if): the speaker here says “non non fa niente se porto questo vestito molto lungo” — “it doesn’t matter if I wear this very long dress.” Notice the doubled “non non” is just a playful stumble, not grammar. Related everyday softeners: “non importa” (it doesn’t matter) and the more casual “fa niente” with the “non” dropped. Built from “fare” (to do/make) plus “niente” (nothing), it sits comfortably in both polite and friendly speech.
