Why is “moto” feminine in Italian?

la moto
Italian word-building
It ends in -o but it’s la moto, not il moto — because it’s short for the feminine word motocicletta.

Most Italian words ending in -o are masculine, so you would expect “il moto.” But it is la moto, feminine. The reason: moto is a short form of motocicletta, which is a feminine word, and the shortened version keeps the gender of the full one. The ending changed, but the gender did not. The same thing happens with la bici, cut down from bicicletta.

Walking through everyday city words, the speaker says it plainly: “Diciamo la moto perché è una motocicletta, quindi moto, motocicletta, bici, bicicletta” — we say la moto because it is a motocicletta. Both shortened words also stay the same in the plural: one moto, two le moto; one bici, two le bici. Motocicletta itself is built from moto- (a root tied to movement) plus the older bicicletta, so the word is really a motor-bicycle. A handy habit: when you meet a clipped Italian word, picture the full word to know whether it takes la or il.
