A girlfriend serves dinner with the standard Romanian send-off: «Poftă bună, iubire, să mănânci tot» (“enjoy your meal, love, eat it all”). Poftă bună is “bon appétit,” literally “good appetite,” what every Romanian says before you dig in.

The key word, poftă, means appetite or craving: “mi-e poftă de ciocolată” is “I’m craving chocolate,” while “poftim?” means “pardon?” or “here you go.” The joke here is the boyfriend who declares he’s finished without finishing, breaking the cardinal rule, să mănânci tot (“eat everything”).
