What does “mâncare” mean in Romanian?

mâncare
Romanian travel survival word
“food” — and also “a dish/meal,” so one word covers the whole table

In Romanian, mâncare is both “food” in general and “a dish” you order — one word for the whole eating-out exchange. It’s built straight from the verb a mânca (“to eat”) plus -re, so it literally names “the eating.” Knowing it unlocks the everyday question ce mâncare ai? (“what food do you have?”), the single phrase that gets you fed almost anywhere in the country.

The root goes back to Latin manducare, “to chew” — the same source that gives French manger and Italian mangiare, where Spanish and Portuguese instead chose comer. That -re ending is Romanian’s “long infinitive” doing double duty as a noun: a mânca → mâncare, much like English “to eat” → “the eating.” You’ll meet the same pattern in mâncare de cartofi (“a potato dish”) and mâncare bună (“good food”) — the line the clip leans on, since, as it says, românii iubesc mâncarea bună (“Romanians love good food”).
