What does “Vous désirez ?” mean in French?

In French shops, désirer (“to desire”) isn’t romantic — it’s simply the polite, formal verb a baker or shopkeeper uses to open a sale. « Vous désirez ? » means nothing more intimate than “What can I get you?” It sits a notch above the everyday vouloir (“to want”), the same way English “How may I assist you?” sits above “What do you want?” — pure register, no innuendo.

You’ll hear the same commercial politeness bracket this clip: the baker opens with « Bonjour » and « Vous désirez ? », then closes the sale with « Autre chose ? » (“Anything else?”) before the ritual « Bonne journée » exchange. The customer answers in kind with the softened conditional « Je voudrais... » (“I would like...”) rather than the blunter « Je veux... » — two halves of one polite exchange, straight out of any French bakery.
