Talking to her cats, the owner never says “łapa” (paw) — it’s always “łapka” (“daj drugą łapkę,” give me the other little paw), alongside “rączka” for the same paw treated like a little hand, and “nosek” for a nose. Polish diminutive endings like “-ka” and “-ek” aren’t just for kids; they’re the default register for anything small, cute, or being coaxed into behaving.

The same suffix turns “pies” (dog) into “piesek,” “kot” (cat) into “kotek” — you’ll meet this pattern constantly in pet, baby, and food talk, and it stacks: a really tiny paw could even become “łapeczka.”
