What does “التجويد” mean in Arabic?
التجويد (at-tajweed) is the classical system of rules that govern how the Quran is recited — controlling each letter’s point of articulation, vowel length, nasalization, and where to pause. The word comes from the root j-w-d (ج-و-د), meaning “to make excellent.” Mastering it is considered an act of devotion: a single mispronounced letter can flip the meaning of a word entirely.
In the clip, the host has heard that twelve-year-old Qusai has a beautiful voice “بالتجوين” — the Levantine spoken form of التجويد. Qusai then recites Surat Al-Baqarah (2:30) aloud, and the host responds with “بسم الله ما شاء الله,” rewarding him with the iPhone. The moment makes التجويد concrete: it is not just a technical term but an audible, praised skill. The rules themselves date to the era of the Prophet’s companions and were codified to preserve the Quran’s pronunciation across generations and dialects.
