What does “atel” (عاطل) mean in Levantine Arabic?

Look up عاطل and you’ll find “unemployed” — عاطل عن العمل, jobless. But in Levantine dialects the same word simply means “bad”: weather, food, behavior, or people can all be عاطل. That’s the joke running through this clip — the narrator feeds his hungry friend all the bananas, then dares viewers ironically, احكوا عني عاطل — “go on, say I’m a bad guy.” One word, two meanings, and context decides.

The classical sense is “idle, without” — a person without work, even a woman without jewelry in old dictionaries — and the dialect stretched “lacking” into plain “no good.” So الجو عاطل is lousy weather and فيلم عاطل a bad movie.
