What does “tianguis” mean in Mexican Spanish?
Tianguis is the everyday Mexican Spanish word for an open-air neighbourhood market — the kind that sets up on a fixed day, takes over a few streets, and sells everything from fresh fish to kitchen supplies. It comes straight from Nahuatl tianquiztli, meaning “open-air market,” and has been used in Mexico without interruption since long before the Spanish arrived. No textbook mercado required — in Mexico, tianguis is what locals actually say.
The word traces back to Classical Nahuatl tiyānquiztli, from tiyāmiqui, “to trade or sell.” Spanish adopted it wholesale and it stuck — one of hundreds of Nahuatl borrowings still alive in everyday Mexican Spanish.
