Intentando escapar de una multa de tráfico

Why do some Spanish speakers say “colocar” instead of “poner”?
Across much of Spain and many regions, you’d “poner una multa” — put/issue a fine. But in Caribbean and northern-Andean Spanish, “colocar” (literally “to place”) quietly takes over the everyday “put” jobs: “voy a colocarte una multa,” “me va a colocar una multa.” For learners it’s a tell of where the speaker is from: where others reach for “poner,” they reach for “colocar.”
Standard Spanish reserves “colocar” for careful placing — arranging or positioning something — and uses “poner” for the broad, all-purpose “put.” In these dialects that line blurs and “colocar” spreads into general use. Both are correct; recognizing the swap helps you place an accent. Bonus vocabulary here: “el cinturón de seguridad” (seatbelt) and “la licencia” (driver’s license).
