What is Nafpaktos in Greece?

Ναύπακτος (Nafpaktos) is a small fortified harbor town on the Gulf of Corinth, in central Greece. Most of the world knows it under its Italian name, Lepanto: in 1571, the Holy League, a Spanish-Venetian-Papal naval coalition, defeated the Ottoman fleet just off the coast in the Battle of Lepanto, one of the most famous sea battles in European history. The Venetian-built castle still crowns the town. Today Nafpaktos is a quiet beach destination, more popular with Greek families than international tourists.
