What does “Éva néni” mean in Hungarian?
When a Hungarian child addresses an adult woman, they don’t use her surname — they use her first name plus néni, literally “auntie.” So a teacher named Éva becomes Éva néni. It signals no family relationship at all; it’s a politeness register kids use for every grown woman. The male counterpart is bácsi (“uncle”), giving you, say, Károly bácsi for an older man.
Because néni already carries the respect, you do not stack the formal pronoun ön on top of it — the warm “auntie” address and cold ön don’t mix. Kindergarten and primary-school teachers are addressed this way throughout childhood, often with a nickname (Kati néni, Évi néni). Adults can use néni/bácsi for much older people too, though between peers it sounds patronising. In the clip a nervous pupil keeps knocking and pleading “Éva néni, bocsánat…” at the staff-room door — a perfect snapshot of the form in its natural habitat.
