What does “dan heb ik niks gezegd” mean in Dutch?

When a Dutch conversation is going nowhere, (dan) heb ik niks gezegd is the quickest way out. Literally “then I’ve said nothing,” it’s what someone says to retreat from a comment that isn’t landing — closer to English “forget I said anything” or “never mind” than to a literal claim about speech. It lets people back out of small arguments without a real apology or admission of being wrong.

That’s the shape of it here: a dad steps into a squabble over the TV, gets told the kids are actually playing a game together, and immediately concedes with nou, dan heb ik niks gezegd — “well, forget I said anything.” The nou (“well”) at the front softens it further, signalling a shrug rather than a real retraction.
