What does “het valt mee” mean in Dutch?

Het valt mee is one of Dutch’s most useful hedging phrases: not “it’s good,” but “it’s better than I expected.” A teenager at a scorching-hot festival can say the heat valt mee because there are sprinklers to cool off in — not that the heat is pleasant, just that it’s manageable. The opposite, het valt tegen, means the reverse: worse than hoped.
