Why does Dutch require “ik” in “ik hou van jou”?

ik hou van jou

Why Dutch sentences need an explicit subject pronoun — the missing “ik” is the joke

Unlike Spanish or Italian, Dutch is not pro-drop: you cannot omit the subject pronoun. “Hou van jou” on its own is grammatically incomplete; Dutch requires the ik. Romance languages let verb endings carry the person, but Dutch verb conjugation overlaps too much (ik hou, jij houdt, hij houdt leave three forms covering six persons) to skip the pronoun safely. Drop ik in a love declaration and you’ve made a grammatical fragment, or worse, an ambiguous one. Dutch partners hear it as evasion, not romance.

In this Quinn en Aaron sketch, a guy says “Hou van jou” on his way out. The girlfriend stops him: “Ik is een persoonlijk voornaamwoord. Hou van jou is dus niet genoeg, hè?”
