What does “knuffelen” mean in Dutch?

Knuffelen is the everyday Dutch verb for hugging or cuddling. The word covers everything from a parent embracing a child to an adult-to-adult hello-hug to a pile of friends piling onto each other for warmth. The Netherlands is more touch-comfortable than its northern-European reputation suggests: knuffelen shows up in toddler curricula, pet writing, and Dutch wellness coverage about loneliness, oxytocin, and stress reduction. Knuffeldier (stuffed animal) and knuffelhoop (group hug, literally “hug pile”) are both productive compounds.
