Klaas oefent als butler en serveert thee
A2 Dutch תרגול האזנה · הולנדית · נבחר בקפידה עבור מתחילים
When do Dutch speakers use “u” vs “jij”?
Dutch has two ways to say “you,” and the choice tells everyone in the room how comfortable you are. U is formal: strangers, older people, customer-facing roles, your boss’s boss, the surgeon, the king. Jij (or je) is everyone else: friends, kids, anyone you’ve ordered drinks with. The line moves: in 1960 a teenager called their parents u; today, jij is normal. The Belgian Dutch line moves slower, u holds firmer in Flanders.
In this NPO Zapp clip, Klaas is rehearsing butler phrases and gets the formality dial cranked: “Mag ik u serveren?” / “Wat mag ik u serveren?” / “Wat mag ik u inschenken?” Every line a u. Pure butler-mode.
