What do “inademen” and “uitademen” mean in Dutch?

inademen / uitademen
Dutch separable verb pair
“breathe in / breathe out”; the in- and uit- prefixes do the directional work

Dutch builds directional verbs by snapping a prefix onto a base verb. Ademen means “to breathe.” Clip on in- and you get inademen — to inhale. Clip on uit- and you get uitademen — to exhale. The prefixes do exactly what they say: in = into, uit = out. The same logic runs across hundreds of Dutch verbs: inrijden / uitrijden, instappen / uitstappen, inladen / uitladen.

A technician coaching a child through a breathing test says: “bij de volgende inademing gaan we” (“at the next inhalation we go”) and “inademen en uit” (“breathe in and out”) — the contracted en uit shows the prefix standing alone after the verb is implied, which is exactly the separability in action. In finite sentences the prefix splits off to the end: ik adem in (I breathe in), je ademt uit (you breathe out). That split is what marks these as separable verbs, and once you hear it you start noticing it everywhere.
