What does “zwoegen en zweten” mean in Dutch?

Zwoegen en zweten is how Dutch describes grinding, unglamorous effort: zwoegen means to toil or labour at something exhausting, and zweten is literally “to sweat.” Paired together, they work like the English “blood, sweat and tears” — two near-synonyms stacked for emphasis rather than adding new information. It’s the phrase people reach for after a long project finally pays off, when the result looks effortless but wasn’t.

In the clip, the pair comes with a third word: zwoegen, zweten, zwaar — toil, sweat, tough — all three starting with the same zw- sound, which is part of what makes the phrase satisfying to say out loud.
