What does it mean when someone calls you “weich” in German?

Weich means soft — a soft pillow, soft bread. Throw it at a person instead, the way one sibling does mid-squabble over who made the better brownie (“du bist weich!”), and it turns into a jab: too sensitive, too easily rattled. It works much like English “soft” used the same way — “don’t go soft on me” — and in this sibling context it lands as a light tease, though the same word aimed elsewhere can sound more dismissive.

The opposite exists too: hart im Nehmen (“tough, can take a hit”) is the compliment version of “weich,” describing someone who doesn’t rattle easily. You’ll also hear Weichei (literally “soft egg”), a noun built straight from the adjective, aimed at someone being a wimp about something small — it’s usually still teasing between friends or family, but it can sting more than “weich” alone, so it’s worth reading the room before using it.
