Kid Confesses To Stealing Dad’s Wedding Ring

Why do American kids say “stealed” instead of “stole”?
Young English-speaking children often say words like stealed instead of stole, goed instead of went, and runned instead of ran. This is not a mistake to fix: it’s a normal stage in learning English. Most English verbs add -ed for the past (walked, jumped), and kids start by guessing this rule for every verb, even the irregular ones. Researchers call this overregularization. After a few years, children pick up the irregular forms and stop. The pattern shows how human brains learn language: kids find the rule first, then learn the exceptions.
In this clip, a small girl confesses to her parents: “I stealed it. Daddy’s wedding ring.” The stealed is pure four-year-old English, and her parents laugh, not correct.
