American 911 dispatchers split their work across separate radio channels: police radio, fire radio, and EMS (medical) radio. Fire radio is the channel for fire-department calls: house fires, brush fires, alarm tests, and fire-engine dispatching. A single dispatcher might cover one channel or rotate, depending on the city. The 911 system itself is an American invention: the first 911 call was placed in Haleyville, Alabama, on February 16, 1968, after AT&T and the Alabama Telephone Company set up the first emergency-dial pilot program.
