What is the “AT” in American hiking?
The AT is the Appalachian Trail, a 2,197-mile (3,536 km) footpath that runs from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. About 4,000 hikers attempt the full “thru-hike” each year, and only about 25% finish. Among hikers, each state along the trail has a nickname. Pennsylvania is called Rocksylvania because the trail through the state is full of jagged, ankle-twisting rocks that ruin boots and break hiker spirits.
