What is the difference between “non lo so” and “non saprei”?

non saprei
Italian register nuance
I’m not sure / I wouldn’t know“ — softer and more open than non lo so, ”I don’t know

Non saprei literally means “I wouldn’t know” — the conditional of sapere — and it’s the gentler, more open cousin of the flat non lo so, “I don’t know.” In everyday chat the two are largely interchangeable, but non saprei leans toward “I’m not sure,” signalling you’d help if you could and might still venture a guess. Non lo so shuts the door; non saprei leaves it ajar.

Compare the feel: asked A che ora apre la farmacia?, a brisk Non lo so ends it, while Non saprei... invites you to wonder together. That conditional mood is the politeness engine — it hedges rather than declares. In English the gap maps neatly: non lo so = “I don’t know,” non saprei = “I’m not sure / I couldn’t say.” Subtle, but it changes how willing you sound to engage.
