What does “mtaji” mean in Moroccan Arabic?

مطاجي (mtaji) is the Moroccan Darija word for a frying pan. The term may trace back to Spanish or Portuguese influence on Maghrebi vocabulary, alongside other Iberian-rooted Darija food words like fatura (“invoice”) and tabla (“table”). In domestic-quarrel humor, mothers and grandmothers threaten unruly relatives with the mtaji the way English-speaking grandmothers used to threaten with a rolling pin or wooden spoon. The image is comic, not real: nobody actually swings the pan, but the threat carries cultural weight in Moroccan family talk.

In this clip, a mother warns her daughter: “الا عاودتي خرجتي من هذه الدار لنفس الغرض، غير بالمطاجي عليها” (“if you leave this house again for the same purpose, I’ll come at her with the frying pan”).
